NaPoWriMo Day 8 Poem 6 1983

Two things almost stopped
my mum from having children

a yearning to travel
and socialist politics.

In 1983, despite Thatcher winning
144 seats in Parliament
my mum was in one place –
an NHS hospital ward,
holding her brown new-born daughter
in home–bound arms.

My mums eyes, blue as the atlas -
promised the justice of how family
can see the world together.
