We have got such a nuts line up this month.

Outspoken boys Anthony Anaxagorou and Karim Kamar will be performing poetry and classical piano. Meaty. Beautiful. Rare.

The rowdy godmother of spoken word, Salena Godden, will be bringing her distinct brand of unpredictability, hilarity and pin-point poignance to the big room.

The incredible Gentle Mystics are lending us their DJ's to play us out into the wee hours with their balkan gypsy punk rap joyousness.

And Chill Pill's own Adam Kammerling is dragging his partner in hip hop crime up from Brighton to kick off their pre album launch tour!

Plus secret special guests, Chill Pill regulars, general poetry happiness and a generous dose of spring time giggles.

See you there.

This Week #RayRecommends The History Of The N - Word on Radio 4, Adam Kammerling & Out-Spoken

Ellah Allfrey at 8pm this Saturday (21st June)

There are some words in English that are so controversial that they are shortened to a single letter lest they cause offence. Perhaps the most inflammatory is the N-word. The proxy barely disguises the racial insult, "nigger", which has topped lists of ugly and hateful words since it was first uttered in the seventeenth century. It has regularly wounded black people, its target, down the ages. When, for instance, the African American boxer, Muhammad Ali, was asked why he resisted the draft in the Vietnam War, he is alleged to have said: "No Vietnamese ever called me nigger."
Ellah Allfrey looks at its evolution from its origins as a mispronunciation of the Spanish "negro" in the 17th century. She illuminates how and why the capitalised "Negro" became the more acceptable version of the word in the 1920s (the landmark adoption of Negro by the New York Times was in 1930); through to the subsequent re-appropriation of the N word in rap and hip-hop culture. But even when coming from the mouths of black people the N word continues to cause offence. There have been calls for the word to be banned. But is this possible or desirable? - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0474xdk

Adam Kammerling has been grafting lately, winning his last Don't Flop battle, dropping a brilliant album and spitting bars like this -- there is no stopping him!

LOOK AT THAT LINE UP AT OUT-SPOKEN! #RayRecommends
Musa Okwonga's poem, Monotony about Drones is powerful and disturbing, haven't got it out of my head.

Lastly, this article is essential reading for native Hackney residents and gentrifiers alike.

Chill Pill back at SOHO THEATRE! October 15th

http://www.sohotheatre.com/whats-on/so-chilled-2012/
We're featuring the brilliant Francesca Beard at the next Soho Theatre, Chill Pill show on October 15th.
www.francescabeard.com
Francesca Beard was born in Malaysia and spent the 70's growing up in Penang, an idyllic island paradise. Since then, quite frankly, life has been down-hill all the way, but with occasional slow climbs... a bit like mowing a sloping lawn. After a spell in real jobs, she gave it all up to become a fictional character and now exists as a London-based poet, performing spoken word to lucky audiences all over Britain and the World.

After Adam toured Ireland with us this summer we couldn't live without him, we now welcome Adam Kammerling to the Chill Pill family.

Adam Kammerling is the 2012 National Hammer & Tongue Champion. He made his debt appearance at Chill Pill last year. Pictures vs Words Q&A w/ Brighton Based Rapper/Poet Adam Kammerling

Been gigging quite a bit with Adam recently, every time I hear his name I'm heard shouting "I LOVE THAT GUY!" and this mini interview hopefully shows why.

What does your writing desk look like?

I don't really use a desk for writing. I write anywhere with a seat that serves tea. And sometimes even where they don't serve tea. Like on buses. I edit my stuff at a desk. It's got piles of envelopes and books on it, a map of paris and three ash and fag encrusted ashtrays adapted from gu pudding pots. And some dirty cups.

What is on your to do list?

Send Sam promo stuff. Ticked.
Send Ray interview and photo response. Soon to have a big tick next to it.
Practice new stuff.
Book trains.

Then I have an infinite mental to do list that includes things like save money, be a better person, read the classics, eat vegetables, quit job, get gigs, watch films, get cleverer etc etc

I feel like my actual to do list is super boring. I'm doing other things today, they're just not on the list. OK?

What's more important, talking or listening?

Listening I reckon. If you don't listen, very little you say will be worth hearing. There's an ancient chinese soundbite in there. Daniel San, one must first listen, only then will he be worth listening to.
Having said that, I am a chatterbox.

What makes a better story pictures or words?

Well I'm gonna have to say words because I'm biased. However, I am constantly envious of the instancy of visual communication. Pictures are more primal, requiring an effort to disengage as opposed to words which demand an effort to engage with. However words give you control. This answer could get really long. I'll curtail it there.

Respond to this photo
Where walls and board char
the same beige shades,
and baking tins are beaten flat
with bricks
by deranged cake-haters,
what else to do but dump rubbish?
But, as no one coos for the baby
in the 'If Found, Return To Pub' onesie,
No one wants to use a bin
With shit Street-Art on it.

Chill Pill At Soho Theatre 1st June

Created by Mista Gee (host of Radio 4’s ‘Bespoken word’ and ‘Rhyme and Reason’), Raymond Antrobus, Deanna Rodger, Simon Mole, and Kim-Leng Hills, Chill Pill is at the cutting edge of underground poetry.

After a hugely successful first outing at Soho Theatre, this night of word based entertainment is back.

Show kicks off at 7.15pm.

As well as the Chill Pill poets, the night will feature:

TSHAKA Campbell is an established spoken word poet. Recognised as an accomplished artist and performer, Campbell was voted one of the 25 people to know in San Francisco. He has toured internationally, and has performed at a variety of venues from the legendary Apollo Theatre in New York to the Poetry Café in London.

The LEANO - Folk/Hip-Hop Band Based in London. After appearing at Chill Pill's Scream Bar shows last summer and completely blowing EVERYONE away we HAD to welcome them back to our space.

ADAM Kammerling - Brighton Spoken Word Slam Champ.

Equally at home in the furnace of a Rap Battle as he is on a poetry stage, Adam’s verbal arsenal and range is very impressive. Whether exploring serious ethical issues or illustrating the frustrations of working in a cake shop when you’re hungry, Adam writes with a lyrical rhythm, rhyme and humour that complements his naturally relaxed delivery and amply showcases his poet's eye for the important absurdities and minutiae of urban life.

Jessie Disco Biscuit - 18 year old Cambridge based Slam Poet.

Jessie Disco Biscuit is a name you want to google as soon as you hear it. She's been rocking poetry nights in Cambridge and word got out to us that she's "the next Kate Tempest". Making her official London debut at Chill Pill - We bring her to you LIVE!
